When it comes to vacuums, the old adage “they don’t make them like they used to” is true. Today’s floor cleaning tools are smarter, automated and more powerful: they can now detect different types of debris an adjust their suction accordingly, empty their own dust bins, let you know the remaining run time and alert you when it’s maintenance time.

We recently tested two such “smart” options under $600 in the cordless vacuum market: The Dyson V11 series ($550) and the Tineco Pure One Station 5 ($459). Both are designed for households with pets, so we put them to the test on our floors that see regular traffic from four humans, one dog and a cat. Keep reading for our hands-on review comparing the two.

Overall Opinion: Tineco Pure One Station 5 Offers the Best Value and Performance

Whether you’re a household of one, two or five (or more), the Tineco Pure Station 5 cordless vacuum is our top pick for its smart debris detection, accessories and all-in-one charging and auto-emptying station. It’s a great choice for busy homes that see lots of foot traffic from animals and humans.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure Station 5: How We Tested the Cordless Vacuums

Tineco Pure One Station 5 and the Dyson V11 cordless stick vacuums.

Our household is home to two adults, two kids and two pets known for having longer hair: a Golden Retriever and a Siamese cat. Suffice to say, our hardwood floors, rugs and kitchen tile see their fair share of shedded animal hair, dirt and other messes every day. Our floors require a minimum of daily vacuuming and weekly mopping to maintain a clean surface.

To put the Dyson V11 and Tineco Pure Station 5 vacuums to the test, we used both devices to clean up leftover sand after returning from a Sunday at the beach; food crumbs and dirt in the kitchen and living room; and dog, cat and human hair.

Dyson vs. Tineco: Docking and Charging Station Comparison, Battery Life

Both the Dyson V11 and the Tineco Pure One Station 5 are easy to set up straight out of the box: simply connect the vacuum units to the wand and desired brush. Tineco’s charging station comes in three parts and is easy to assemble, and requires a fairly compact footprint (about 15 by 13 inches).

For those who are tight on space, Dyson’s simple wall-mounted charging station might be more ideal.

The Dyson V11 has a battery life of up to 60 minutes with continuous use, while the Tineco Pure One Station 5 runs for up to 70 minutes on Auto Mode.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: Dust Bin Capacity and Management

Both devices have built-in dust collection bins, but only the Tineco is equipped with a multi-tasking station that automatically empties debris, cleans the vacuum filter and charges the device.

At a total capacity of 3.5 liters (one for the vacuum and 2.5 L for the charging station), Tineco’s vacuum can also hold more debris than Dyson’s, which only has a 0.2 gallon (or .757 L) dust bin that needs to be emptied manually via a “hygienic ejection mechanism that drives out dust in a single action,” per the company.

When it comes to managing debris, the Tineco Pure One Station 5 also has a larger debris pathway, allowing it to take in more dirt and hair without getting clogged. Although the Dyson V11’s motor is more powerful, the vacuum has a narrower tube and a standard brush that doesn’t detangle quite as well as Tineco’s.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: Ergonomics and User Experience

We preferred the Tineco Pure One Station 5 cordless vacuum’s one-touch button design over the Dyson V11’s trigger-style button that needs to be held down during use. While the Dyson is convenient for spot cleaning, our hands felt tired while holding the button for longer periods.

The Tineco Pure One Station 5, on the other hand, requires just one press of the power button to start vacuuming. We tended to leave the unit running while cleaning from one spot to another, which used up more battery. However, the Tineco vacuum had a more ergonomic design, making it easier to use overall.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: Cleaning Modes, Dust Detection and Suction Adjustment

Dyson’s suction power was noticeably stronger at about 185 air watts, while Tineco offered 175 air watts. Both the Tineco and Dyson vacuums feature LCD screens that display the cleaning modes (Eco, Medium and boost for Dyson; Eco, Auto and Max fo Tineco), available run time, filter maintenance alerts and blockage alerts.

Both the Tineco Pure One Station 5 and the Dyson V11 cordless vacuums feature smart sensors that detect dust and adjust the suction accordingly. Tineco’s iLoop Smart Sensor continuously monitors dust levels and customizes the suction in real time on hard floors such as wood, laminate and multi-surface types. The Dyson V11, meanwhile, bases its suction on brush resistance rather than actual dust levels.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: Anti-Tangle Brush Heads and Accessories Comparison

Danielle Directo-Meston/THR

We were particularly interested in the anti-tangle brush attachments because of our household’s long-haired humans and pets. Our golden retriever sheds regularly, requiring cleanup daily or every other day to avoid hairball buildup in corners and under furniture.

Dyson’s V11 includes four accessories: a motorbar cleaner head, a combination tool, a crevice tool and a hair screw tool specifically designed for cleaning pet hair from rugs, carpet and upholstery. Tineco’s Pure One Station 5 includes a ZeroTangle brush with a laser indicator (to better see the dirt particles in your path) and a two-in-one crevice brush. Overall, we preferred Tineco’s light-enabled accessory that made cleaning clear and and simple.

Both the anti-tangle brushes on the Dyson and Tineco vacuums were effective in picking up all lengths of human and animal hair, but we preferred the latter’s ZeroTangle brush (which featured bristled in a V-shape design and a dual-comb mechanism) for its overall ease of use and self-detangling.

Dyson’s brush head features hair removal vanes “designed to lift and remove hair as the roller spins,” which we found effective in cleaning all lengths of human and animal hair. However, longer strands of hair needed to be cut loose after getting wrapped around the brush.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: HEPA Filter

Both the Dyson V11 and the Tineco Pure Station 5 are equipped with with HEPA filters, which trap 99.99 percent of debris as small as 0.3 microns, such as dust and allergens. We like that both vacuums’ filters can be washed and reused, so you don’t need to buy replacements as frequently.

Tineco says it uses a “centrifugal dust separation system” that helps to reduce buildup by trapping fine dust before it reaches the filter. Dyson’s V11 uses a similar system that separates smaller and larger particles.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: Noise Level

Those concerned by noise will prefer Tineco’s Pure One Station 5 cordless vacuum, which the company says runs at approximately 72 decibels. Dyson’s V11 operates at about 78 decibels at its highest power level.

Dyson V11 vs. Tineco Pure One Station 5: Overall Opinion

Although the Dyson V11 cordless vacuum is noticably lighter, has a stronger suction and includes more accessories, Tineco’s Pure One Station 5 is the top pick based on ease of use, brush attachment features (especially the laser-equipped accessory) and — most importantly — the all-in-one charging and auto-emptying docking station. At only $459, the Tineco vacuum delivers much better value than the $550 Dyson V11 device, which must be manually emptied.
